Christine Kondoleon, "Making Past Present: Cy Twombly”

Christine Kondoleon, Chair Emerita of the Department of Art of Ancient Greece and Rome, will guide an in-depth walk at the Museum of Fine Arts through her most recent exhibition, "Making Past Present: Cy Twombly.”  Like few of his peers in postwar American art, Twombly (1928–2011) appreciated the richness of the world’s classical heritage, believing that “Modern Art isn’t dislocated, but something with roots, tradition, and continuity.“  This exhibition presents about 130 works by Twombly and places them face to face with items from the MFA collections of ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Near Eastern art, including inscriptions on stone, marble sculptures, and classical depictions of war. The old and new together show how Twombly translated and interpreted the past to push art forward in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Please note this meeting is on a Thursday, when the MFA is open late.
